Today's Feastday, Saint Boniface
Today is a Memorial in honor of Saint Boniface on this Saturday in the Ninth
Week of Ordinary Time. Boniface, Apostle to the Germans, was originally an
Englishman named Wilfrid. He became a Benedictine monk and in 716 was sent by
the Pope to evangelize the German tribes. Boniface traveled constantly,
establishing dioceses and monasteries. His most beloved monastery was at
Fulda. Boniface labored also to reorganize the Church in France, and was
killed with 52 companions by pagan fanatics in 755. He is buried in Fulda.
In today's first reading the angel Raphael reveals his identity and gives
some religious instructions. The Book of Tobit reflects Jewish piety and
belief in the latter centuries of the Old Testament. Many other details are
given in the complete Book.
After nine weeks we end a consecutive reading of the Second Gospel. We
stop before the Passion Narrative. In today's second reading Jesus warns
against the self-serving religion of the scribes, and praises the generous
religion of the poor widow.
Today's Prayer
Lord,
your martyr Boniface
spread the faith by his teaching
and witnessed to it with his blood.
By the help of his prayers
keep us loyal to our faith
and give us the courage to profess it in our lives.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Spiritual Communion Prayer
Please join us with this prayer in asking the Lord Jesus to be with you.
Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I long for you in my soul.
Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I know You have already come.
I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You;
never permit me to be separated from You.
