Bishop Nicholas Anthony DiMarzio is the Auxiliary
Bishop of Newark and Pastor of Mount Carmel Church in Newark and Regional Bishop of Essex
County. Bishop DiMarzio is a board member of The International Catholic Migration
Commission; The Center for Migration Studies of New York, Inc.; The National Immigration,
Refugee and Citizenship Forum, where he also served as chairman of the board from 1986 to
1989. He serves as consultant with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; the
Latin-American Episcopal Conference, Georgetown University; and The Catholic University of
America. He is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. As the Executive
Director of Catholic Community Services, Bishop DiMarzio oversees the largest private
non-profit social service provider in New Jersey. Bishop Dimarzio was given a special
award for the New York Association for New Americans in June, 1989. In January of 1986 he
was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and in May of the same year, Pope
John Paul II named him Prelate of Honor.
His efforts have also included defense of Central American refugees seeking political
asylum which presently handles over 200 asylum cases. In assisting migration efforts as
founding director of the Office of Migration, Bishop DiMarzio initiated a program to
assist in the resettlement program for Indochinese in the Archdiocese which has resulted
in settling over two thousand people and brought federal refugee funds to the State of New
Jersey. The developmental accomplishments of Bishop DiMarzio include the establishment of
a legal network through regional offices; known as CLINIC -- Catholic Legal Immigration
Network, Inc. benefitting over thirty dioceses to date.
Bishop DiMarzio was also staff to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee
on Migration. He provided guidance to the USCC Migration and Refugee Services Office,
along with the monitoring of legislation before both houses of Congress which included
policy positions to Congress and special advocacy efforts for the 1986 Immigration Reform
and Control Act.
Bishop DiMarzio is a native of Newark, New Jersey and was ordained to the priesthood May
30, 1970. In 1980 he was awarded an M.S.W. from Fordam University and five years later was
awarded a Ph.D. in Social Work Policy and Research from Rutgers University.
