President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications Recipient of the 1997 Saint Ann's Media Award Archbishop John P Foley is the 1997 recipient of the Saint Ann's Media Award. Abp. Foley is the President of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Social Communications. Born Nov.11, 1935 in Philadelphia, he attended St. Joseph Preparatory School and St. Joseph College in Philadelphia, receiving a bachelor's degree in history. He also has a doctorate in philosophy and a master's degree in journalism. Ordained May 19, 1962, in Philadelphia, he was named assistant editor and Rome correspondent of the Catholic Standard and Times in 1963. In 1967 the then-Father Foley was present at the Vatican ceremony when Archbishop John Krol of Philadelphia was made a member of the College of Cardinals. Another prelate to receive the red hat that day was then Archbishop Karol Wojtyla of Cracow, Poland, who later became Pope John Paul II. In 1970 Archbishop Cardinal Krol appointed then Father Foley Editor of the Catholic Standard and Times, a post he held until 1984. He served as a member of the board of governors of the 41st International Eucharistic Congress in 1976 and was named a monsignor that same year. He was a member of a member of the regional board of directors of the National Conference of Christians and Jews (1968-1983), a member of the board of directors and vice-president of the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada (1977-1984) and vice-chairman of the Pennsylvania State Ethics Commission (1979-1984). He served as news secretary for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in the United States (1969-1984) and as English-language liaison for Pope John Paul's visits to the Ireland, the United States and Canada (1979) and for the International Synod of Bishops held in Rome in 1980. On April 9, 1984 Pope John Paul II named him Archbishop and President of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Social Communications. He was ordained an Archbishop by Cardinal Krol on May 8, 1984. Archbishop Foley has served as president of the council of administration of the Vatican Television Center (1984-1989), member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America (1984-1989), and is now a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture. Archbishop Foley has received numerous awards including the St. Francis de Sales Award of the Catholic Press Association (1984), Knight Commander with Grand Cross, Order of the Northern Star, Kingdom of Sweden (1991), and Knight Commander with Grand Cross, Order of Holy Sepulcher (1991). His responsibilities also include the Vatican Film Library and the satellite transmission and commentary for the Christmas Midnight Mass from St Peter's Basilica, Rome. For his life-long commitment to enlivening the communications media with a human and Christian spirit we present Archbishop John P. Foley the 1997 St Ann's Media Award.
